Balancing Work & School
School work, not work is the priority
It’s very common for seniors to want to work during their senior year.
The extra income helps pay for transportation, car insurance, or entertainment.
However, it’s important to strike a balance between work and school so
that school work does not suffer.
Seniors: Whether you’re going on to college, the military or straight
out into the work world when you graduate, your high school performance will
follow you. Studying should be your first priority. Finding a balance with work,
sports, and social activities should always come after school work.
Families should consider these issues:
- Will the employer be flexible about work hours?
- Can you take a few days off during finals week?
- Are weekend hours available?
- What is your curfew?
- What are the state guidelines for this age?
- Will the job require too much time commitment?
- Is transportation convenient?
- Is it a safe working environment?
- Will the job look good on a college application or a resume?
- Is the job available during breaks from school?
