Setting Expectations

Start senior year on the right foot
A great way to alleviate unnecessary stress and conflict between parents and seniors is to clearly and calmly communicate your expectations of each other.

Parents have certain expectations of their children and children have expectations of their parents. And both may have a different perspective on what the senior year is all about.

Use this list of subjects/questions to open the lines of communication. Add your own to make this a more personal experience for both parents and seniors.

What do seniors expect from their parents?

  • A safe place to live. For how long?
  • Support that they consider a “comfort zone”.
  • Money to do things. How much?
  • Clothes. What brand?
  • Transportation; whether it is a ride, use of the family car or support for their own car. Insurance? Gas money?
  • Privacy.
  • What parents won’t do? For example – I will not tell the school you’re sick so you can stay home to complete a project.
