Crown, Pacemakers: The best of the best

The Columbia Scholastic Press Association [CSPA] Gold Crown and the National Scholastic Press Association [NSPA] Pacemaker are considered top national journalism awards for student publications.

Jostens, Dartmouth College earn back-to-back PIA Benny Awards

Jostens recently earned the coveted Best of Category Benny, taking top honors in the internationally renowned 2010 Premier Print Awards, while also laying claim to a first-place Award of Recognition and 10 additional second-place Certificate of Merit awards.

The Premier Print Awards is a highly competitive printing contest sponsored by the Printing Industries of America [PIA].

More than 100 entries were submitted in the School Yearbook category with Jostens earning the only Best of Category Benny. The yearbook entries submitted by Jostens earned 12 awards in the School Yearbook category:

Adviser Awards

Associations honor advisers for national contributions

Several Jostens customers were recognized during the 2009-2010 school year by the Columbia Scholastic Press Association, Journalism Education Association and the National Scholastic Press Association for their contributions to scholastic journalism on the national level.

Linda Drake, Chase County High School, Cottonwood Falls, KS, was among five individuals earning the Columbia Scholastic Press Association Gold Key for “outstanding devotion to the cause of the student press.”

Michele Dunaway, Francis Howell Senior High School, St. Charles, MO, received a JEA Medal of Merit Award. Including Dunaway, four Medals of Merit were awarded to JEA members who have made significant contributions to scholastic journalism.

Mark Newton, Mountain Vista High School, Highlands Ranch, CO, was among five individuals honored with the NSPA Pioneer Award. The Pioneer Award recognizes substantial contributions to scholastic journalism outside regular job requirements as well as service to NSPA and its programs.

Carol Richtsmeier, Midlothian High School, Midlothian, TX, and Ray Westbrook, St. Mark’s School of Texas, Dallas, TX, were among nine educators recognized by the Dow Jones Newspaper Fund as part of its High School Journalism Teacher of the Year awards program. Richtsmeier and Westbrook were among four teachers being recognized as Distinguished Advisers.

Kathleen Zwiebel, Pottsville Area High School, Pottsville PA, earned the Joseph M. Murphy Award for exemplary service to the Columbia Scholastic Press Association.

In addition to six advisers, John Cutsinger of Jostens was one of five individuals recognized with JEA Friend of Scholastic Journalism Award. The honor is given to any individual or group making a significant contribution to scholastic journalism.

National Yearbook Adviser of the Year

Lori Oglesbee, yearbook adviser at McKinney High School, McKinney, TX, was named the 2009 National Yearbook Adviser at a surprise presentation at her school in January.

“I love seeing kids achieve beyond their wildest imaginations. It’s infectious and lasts a lifetime. They leave here knowing they have been a part of something extraordinary, Oglesbee said.
