A great yearbook page design isn't just about the look, it's also about how it makes you feel.

Yearbook designers are also storytellers buy you need to plan the best way to communicate. Try some of these design ideas to keep the readers engaged.

Get Inspired

Look for inspiration in new and everyday places. Try getting up close or seeing things from an angle you would not normally have. You can even sketch out ideas and adjust as needed.

Rule of threes

  • Three types of photos – individual subject, larger groups, smaller groups
  • Three parts of the event - before, during, after
  • Three pops of color - Accent with color in at least 3 places.

Get Creative

Just about anyone can take a photo, so make yours better than the average persons. Try to understand the elements of good photography and how to use your camera.  Take lots of practice shots and try using unique angles.

Switch It Up

Using a template is a great way to start, but don’t be afraid to switch it up and make the design your own. If the template you want doesn’t work with a great photo you have, just change it!

Good, or just good enough?

Does this layout look the best it can? It’s a big question you may find yourself asking when designing the yearbook. After all, the whole school community is going to see it. If your feeling unsure, save your layout as a template then redesign the page a different way. Give yourself options and compare them. Ask someone for outside input and use the one that best tells the story.

Don’t fear the Negative Space

Sure, you want to include as many pictures as you can and have lots of coverage but sometimes those great photos can get lost. Use white space to really make a stellar photo stand out.
