Unprecedented. Uncertain. Unsure.

A lot of “un” words have been thrown around in 2020 — and it’s easy to see why. Parenting through the pandemic is challenging. But believe it or not, there are ways to navigate this new normal. These simple tips might help beat back some of the uncertainty and bring us closer to our families.

TIP #1: COLLABORATE. CONNECT. COME TOGETHER.

The pandemic touched everyone’s life in one way or another. The good news: We are all going through this. Together. That means other parents are experiencing the same things you are. It might be a good time to reach out and exchange tips with them via email, social media, Zoom, or another socially distanced platform you prefer. It’s a way to feel more connected and less isolated. And hey, you might learn a thing or two.

TIP #2: ROUTINES MAKE THINGS FEEL NORMAL

There are many benefits to having a routine. They may reduce stress and anxiety — and we all know there’s plenty of that to go around. Plus, a routine helps you and your kids feel normal. Regular mealtimes. Scheduled breaks. Separated workspaces. All of this can go a long way in keeping your family grounded and productive.

TIP #3: MAKE A MOTIVATING REWARD SYSTEM

Let’s face it, motivation is in short supply these days. Convincing your kid to focus on math homework is not so easy when there are so many distractions. That’s why it’s important to not only set goals but celebrate completing them in an extra special way. Find out what motivates your student — whether that’s food, video games, Netflix, or whatever else — and come up with fun ways to reward them for finishing tasks.

TIP #4: OUT-OF-THE-BOX INDOOR ACTIVITIES

For many families, the pandemic has given rise to a lot more inside time. As a result, it’s easy to grow tired of the same old TV shows and social media apps. Try searching for fun ways to stay entertained that don’t involve the usual couch activities. Card games, crafts, recipes — the possibilities are endless. TIP #5: KNOW WHEN TO STEP BACK

The lines between school, work and leisure time seem completely blurred these days. That’s why, more than ever, it’s important to know when to take breaks and walk away from work and school at the end of the day. Because you and your kids need time to recharge to stay focused, stay positive, and stay awesome.
