HISTORY OF THE CAP & GOWN
Originating at Oxford in England in the 12th & 13th Century, the cap and gown were worn to express the person’s academic endeavors. It also served as an extra garment to keep warm in the cold halls of medieval universities.
In order to ensure true match of materials, our caps and gowns are sold only in a complete unit of cap, gown, and tassel.
Jostens gowns have an 8-1/2 inch floor clearance. The required measurements are detailed here to assist you in obtaining accurate measurements:
- Height: Record total height from the top of the head to the floor while not wearing shoes.
- Weight: List approximate weight in street clothes.
Yes, tassels and most year dates are available for the past 20 years.
The graduation cap is to be worn flat on your head, not tilted to the back. Point should be directly in front.
A stole is a contoured fabric piece worn hung around your neck over your gown. It can be used to honor class officers, top achievers such as valedictorian or just as a formal finishing touch to your cap and gown. Stoles can also be decorated with a class of design.
Cords are two braided ropes to be worn over your cap and gown. If your class is also using stoles, the cord goes on top of the stole. Cords can be used for: Officers, Honor Students, First graduates within a family, community service and more.
Start with the tassel on the right side of the cap and turn it to the left after you receive your diploma.
Jostens Kinderkraft®, Academic and BDG gowns are made from 100% breathable and lightweight Polyester.
The Elements Collection™ uses a fabric from renewable managed forests. This fabric is scientifically proven to completely biodegrade.*
*In a laboratory test conducted by an independent testing facility in accordance with ISO 15985 and ASTM D5511, complete biodegradation was achieved within 15 days on shredded samples of fabric used in the Elements Collection™ cap, gown and hood shell. Accelerated testing was conducted under anaerobic conditions pursuant to the standards set forth above. Results in municipal solid waste landfills will vary depending on sample size and environmental conditions including temperature, biological activity and exposure to moisture and oxygen.
Upon receipt of your graduation gown, promptly remove it from the packaging and hang it up. To remove wrinkles, you may choose to press with a cool iron, use a steamer or hang gown in a steamy room.
